Leadership Now CEO Daniella Ballou-Aares’s TED Talk, How business leaders can renew democracy
Key Highlights From Daniella's Talk:
A reminder that neutrality is not an option: History tells us that when business leaders stay “neutral” or passively enable autocrats – from Nazi Germany to modern-day Hungary – democracies atrophy and collapse.
A call to action to fellow Gen X business leaders: GenX now represents two-thirds of all CEOs. Coming of age at the end of the Cold War, Gen Xers in many countries assumed that the rule of law and democratic capitalism were in ascendance. We can no longer sit on the sidelines.
It could happen here – Jan 6th brings the democracy risk home: Living six blocks from the Capitol during the January 6th insurrection, Daniella feared for her children while having a front row on American democracy’s decline.
Powerful case studies of Leadership Now members across the country taking action to protect our political system, including standing for the legitimacy of the 2020 election, setting pro-democracy standards for candidates in Wisconsin, protecting ballot initiatives in Ohio, and reforming the Electoral Count Act in Washington D.C.
“What we need now are courageous leaders who understand that it is squarely in their self-interest to protect our elections and reform our institutions, to ensure that disinformation doesn't dominate politics and to really play their role in protecting our system.” - Daniella Ballou-Aares
