Reproductive rights are at the forefront of U.S. politics, and business leaders have a critical role to play in supporting these rights. Beyond the moral argument, there is a clear economic impact.
Since the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, states with abortion bans or extreme restrictions have cost the U.S. economy an estimated $68 billion, according to the Institute for Women’s Policy Research. If reproductive health restrictions were eliminated, women could have earned over $8 billion more in 2023, and 360,500 more women would participate in the workforce each year. These restrictions significantly affect workplace productivity, labor force participation, and overall economic stability.
As Michelle Greene of the Leadership Now Project points out, “There’s a whole economic case for why this is important. Women’s ability to make their own choices about their lives and careers directly impacts the broader economy.”
Supporting reproductive rights isn’t just a social issue—it’s an economic imperative. Businesses can step up by supporting employees, offering reproductive healthcare coverage, and using their voices to protect democracy and fundamental rights.
